Literacy Initiatives

In 2015, the Harvey County United Way Board of Directors launched its first Community Impact project, the Literacy Initiative.

The first phase of this initiative was primarily focused on early reading, with two main components: Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library and KidFEST.

Early reading is the first step to academic success. The United Way Worldwide Education Agenda links early reading to kindergarten readiness. Kindergarten readiness has a direct link to third grade reading proficiency. And, third grade reading proficiency is tied to high school completion.

The first phase was wildly successful, encouraging the board to consider additional phases in the future.
